The best security is multi-layered, and the most ineffective layer is running some kind of antivirus or antispyware software.
Here are the layers:
1. Set Windows updates to install automatically. Any operating system (yes, including Mac OS X and Linux distros) has security holes, and when those get discovered, they get patched with security updates, but you have to actually install the updates to get that added security.
2. Use a limited user account instead of an administrator one. Most malware is designed to take advantage of the administrator-by-default policy that’s in Windows (yes, even with Windows Vista’s UAC “Are you sure you want to…” extra click), so you will avoid most malware just by running a limited user account. And even if your user account is somehow compromised, you can easily remove the malware by creating a new account and deleting the old account instead of reinstalling Windows completely.
3. Back up your personal files regularly. No explanation necessary on this one.
4. Avoid the Limewire-to-download-illegal-movies-and-… behavior that seems to rampant among Yahoo! users here. That’s a quick way to get infected.
